Panthers power past Winthrop for third straight win
HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point continued to assert its dominance in the Big South with a 68-58 victory over Winthrop, extending its winning streak to three games and solidifying its hold on first place. The Panthers (15-11, 10-3) came alive in the fourth quarter, powered by standout performances from Aaliyah Collins, who led the way with 17 points, and Lauren Scott, who contributed 15 points, including four three-pointers. Nakyah Terrell also chipped in with 14 points to help secure the win.
"I don't think the execution was great for 40 minutes, but I thought the girls came out really strong to start the fourth and made plays to extend our lead," said Head Coach Chelsea Banbury. "I'm excited to see Aaliyah getting back into it and feeling more like herself. Lauren has been huge for us as she's been shooting the ball really well."
The game was tightly contested early, with both teams exchanging leads throughout the first half. Winthrop (13-13, 7-6) briefly held a six-point advantage in the first quarter, but High Point responded with a strong second period to take control. The Panthers pulled away in the third, pushing their lead to double digits. Key contributions from Scott and Terrell in the final minutes sealed the victory for HPU.
High Point shot 47.1% from the field and 38.9% from three, while dominating in the paint, outscoring Winthrop 32-30, and capitalizing on fast-break opportunities with a 13-4 advantage.
Panthers Take Advantage
High Point capitalized on fast-break opportunities, outscoring Winthrop 13-4 in transition. Their quick ball movement and excellent court awareness helped them push the lead at critical moments, making it difficult for the Eagles to mount a comeback.
Turnover Central
The Panthers’ defense was suffocating, forcing 18 turnovers and holding Winthrop to just 58 points. High Point’s ability to capitalize on those turnovers helped it maintain control throughout the game.
Panthers’ Inside Presence
High Point won the battle in the paint, outscoring Winthrop 32-30. Despite Winthrop's strong perimeter shooting, the Panthers' dominance inside and ability to secure rebounds allowed them to dictate the tempo. Their advantage in the post was a key factor in limiting the Eagles’ scoring opportunities in the second half.
Up Next
The Panthers will travel to Charleston Southern on Wednesday, February 19, as they continue their push for the top spot in the Big South standings.
